Questions about Dental Bridges

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Dental bridges have been around for a long time, but the technology now available makes this an attractive option for replacing missing teeth. Dr. White can answer any questions about dental bridges you may have during your initial consultation.

How are Dental Bridges different from dentures?

Dentures
are fitted to replace part, or all of the upper and lower portions of an edentulous or toothless jaw. Dental bridges are used where there are fewer missing teeth with available abutment teeth, which are necessary to support the bridge. Here is how the bridge works.

  • The abutment teeth, to either side of the tooth gap, are prepared and fitted for crowns.
  • The abutments support a pontic piece, made of the same material in the tooth gap.
  • The bridge is affixed permanently in place, creating a new chewing surface.

How long does a Dental Bridge take to put in place?

In many offices, the procedure takes at least two visits.  During the visit, the abutment teeth are prepared and a temporary placed.  You will return in about 2 weeks to have your new restoration placed.

Will people notice that I have a Dental Bridge?

With modern technology, Dr. White will construct a dental bridge that will match the surrounding teeth as closely as possible. In most cases, no one will notice the difference.

How do I care for Dental Bridges?

The answer is easy, simply brushing and flossing the same as before. Obviously, you will need to modify the way you floss between the pontic and the abutment portions of your teeth, but you should maintain your regular oral care regimen, including regular check ups, in order to maintain your healthy, new smile.

What if I have more than one missing tooth? Will a Dental Bridge still work?

Dental bridges are still an option to fill in more than one tooth gap, however, there must be additional abutment teeth surrounding the gap available in order to support the pontic or bridge teeth. Dr. White will carefully calculate the amount of abutment material available to ensure that a dental bridge is the restoration you need. Other options may include:
