What is Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Sleep apnea affects millions of people worldwide and can have a serious impact on your quality of life. Most often, being overweight or having other respiratory issues can increase your chances of developing sleep apnea. The condition is caused by the soft tissues at the very back of the throat relaxing and covering the airway. This results in loud snoring and cessations in your breathing throughout the night, which causes you to continually wake up to catch your breath. We offer a simple oral appliance that opens the airway, eliminating sleep apnea symptoms.

Why Does Sleep Apnea Require Treatment?

This is a very serious condition that can cause life threatening problems. It causes problems with the blood vessels that can lead to heart attacks, and strokes. Sleep apnea has been implicated in Type II Diabetes, as well as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

What Forms of Treatment Are Available?

Treatment depends on severity of the apnea; determined by a sleep study, and physical conditions that are either causing the problem, or limit treatment options. They can include: surgery, diet regimens, use of anti-snore guards, and/or CPAP machines.

What Is Involved In Treatment?

Treatment for sleep apnea in our office involves being fitted for an oral appliance called a snore guard. This device is worn in the mouth, and works by slowly advancing the lower jaw forward, in order to open the airway and allow for unobstructed breathing. Once enough oxygen is delivered to the blood, sleep apnea can be greatly reduced, or eliminated.
